Italian star points the way to success
Thursday 24th May 2018
Event start: 18.00
A surprise appearance by world-famous jockey Frankie Dettori provided a welcome bonus for members of the AFC Wimbledon Business Club on Thursday night.
Thanks to sponsorship by Andrew Harding from Your Golf Travel, guests enjoyed being treated to hospitality in the Eclipse Pavilion Box at Sandown Racecourse, and there was a touch of star quality added when Frankie found time to pop by and say hello.
Despite his riding commitments on the night and media work for ITV, one of the biggest personalities in sport provided tips for members. Frankie signed off his short speech with the following quip, ‘Hopefully by the end of the night you will all be millionaires!’ Though that prediction came up a little short, the Italian maestro tipped two winners and two placed horses out of four races, making it a profitable night for anyone who followed his tips!
You can tell that a lot of planning has gone into the events staged by the business club. They have been varied events and very enjoyable to attend.

“Getting Frankie up here to say hello and pass on a few tips was a big buzz,” said AFC Wimbledon Commercial Director Ivor Heller. “He is the most famous jockey of all and a great personality. It was amazing that Frankie popped in and he gave us all a couple of winners, which was fantastic.
“It’s very important to thank Andrew Harding from Your Golf Travel for sponsoring this event, along with Sandown Racecourse and the Jockey Club, because we were looked after really well. The businesses from Wimbledon have come here to a local track and had a great night. Every event we’ve been put on since we started the club in October has been fun. Networking should not be about sitting there and getting bored, it should be about meeting people and doing business in a fun and friendly environment.”
There was also a treat for Wimbledon fans amongst the group as they chatted with our manager Neal Ardley, who joined members in hospitality on the night.
Suzy Wood, Centre Director at Centre Court Shopping Centre in Wimbledon, enjoyed a special privilege as she got to ring the bell in the parade ring at Sandown, which is a pre-race signal for jockeys to mount their horses.
“It’s been a massive highlight of my life so far! I didn’t expect to be ringing the bell in the parade ring or for Frankie to come in and say hello. It was amazing. We’ve enjoyed showing our support for the AFC Wimbledon Business Club. We are very community focused and we’ve been involved with AFC Wimbledon for a very long time. Hosting events such as the kit launch gives us a bigger reach as people come from miles around to come and see us on that day. You can tell that a lot of planning has gone into the events staged by the business club. They have been varied events and very enjoyable to attend.”
Roll on the next AFC Wimbledon Business Club event, which is a business breakfast to coincide with EFL fixture release day on 21 June.
